Since April 26th 2010,
gbk
have been making a voluntary 25p donation on behalf of every
gbk
customer who buys a kiwiburger to help save New Zealand's rare and iconic kiwi. This sponsorship helps the
Whakatane (pronounced far-car-tar-neh) kiwi Trust
, a New Zealand community group that is working hard to protect and grow the local kiwi population. Considering you munch your way through about 2,000 of these burgers a week, you can imagine how much money is being donated.
The first gbk kiwi chick has been released into the wild, his Maori name is Aotearoa, pronounced a-O-tee-a-rO-a and means Land of the long White Cloud. We have nicknamed him Beetroot. So if you see him wandering the forests of Whakatane do say hello
Whakatane is a small town on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand renowned for its glorious beaches, native bush and sunshine, and is the self-proclaimed kiwi Capital of New Zealand, make that the world!
Gbk MD, David Sykes said that
gbk
is very proud of its New Zealand heritage and considers it very appropriate that the kiwiburger is associated with a New Zealand kiwi conservation project.
Cat Kebbeh, marketing director of
gbk
said "gbk
is really loving developing a long-term relationship with the Whakatane kiwi Trust and watching that kiwi flourish in Whakatane"
Whakatane kiwi Trust chairperson, Lorraine Brill, said "Although kiwi numbers are steeply declining around New Zealand, we have an expanding resident kiwi population in Whakatane. We have even had kiwis wander into gardens and kiwi signs on the roads to warn motorists to watch out for kiwi.
Lorraine said that the
gbk
initiative was fantastic and will enable us to do even hands on work
*
gbk
have set up a charitable trust account with the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) in order to receive the voluntary contributions made by
gbk
customers in support of the Whakatane kiwi Trust. CAF is a registered UK charity which facilitates charitable giving (Registered Charity Number 268369). The contributions made by
gbk
customers will be paid to the said charitable trust account held at CAF and at least 98% of monies received into that account will be paid directly to Whakatane kiwi Trust
